Winchester Cathedral

This is an exciting variety, prone to very well formed pure white blooms (except for when they aren’t white), and is among the strongest repeaters in my collection. I keep one of them in a large container on our back deck, and it can be counted on to produce surprisingly full flushes of bloom, like clockwork, every five weeks.

Winchester Cathedral has a very strong scent, essentially a 50/50 mix of “old rose” and almond blossom. The almond is distinct and instantly recognizable. If you enjoy marzipan or macaroons, these blooms will taunt you. Individually, they do not last long — so this is not a variety you grow to fill vases in the house. But it produces a lot of blooms, often covering the shrub. It’s truly meant as a garden plant, positioned near a seating area, a capacity in which it is an absolute stunner.

Pros:

    • Exceptional repeat performance
    • Vigorous and forms a nicely shaped shrub
    • Very strong scent

Cons:

  • Extremely well armed
  • The blend of old rose scent with almond isn’t always harmonious
  • Mildly susceptible to downy mildew and blackspot
